Ancient Philosophy
In the Western tradition, "Ancient Philosophy" refers to Greek and Roman philosophy from around 600 BC until 500 AD. It is usually considered to begin with Thales and end with a variety of late Neoplatonists. This period is often divided into four main sections: The Presocratics, Plato, Aristotle, and the Hellenistic philosophers. Some of the schools of thought, in addition to followers of Plato and Aristotle, that thrived during this period included the Pythagoreans, Stoics, Skeptics, Epicureans, Cynics, and Sophists. Ancient philosophy laid much of the ground work for later philosophers in all of the major branches of philosophy, including metaphysics, epistemology, logic, ethics, political philosophy, and more.
