EpistemeLinks.com Update Newsletter, v.5, #2 5/6/2001
------------------------------------------------------
It has been nearly two months since the last ELC Update Newsletter. I've
had a good start to spring, and I hope you are doing well also.
As always, the latest links added to the ELC database can be found at the
What's New? page:
(Many more links are added to the site than are mentioned in this
newsletter.)
Newsletter Headlines
** Birthday and Dates of Death Calendars **
** 24 More Philosophers Indexed **
** Journals Section Improved **
** Help Support ELC -- use new Associate Programs **
** 10 New Entries at the SEP **
** Recent and Upcoming Events in Philosophy (May/June) **
Details for each item follow below.
** Birthday and Dates of Death Calendars **
Two near features were added to ELC: a Philosopher Birthdays calendar and a
Philosopher Dates of Death calendar. Both are browseable by month and are
displayed in a graphical calendar table. Nearly 100 philosophers are included so
far, and many more will be added in the weeks to come. Each philosopher listed
is linked to his or her main results page as well.
** 24 More Philosophers Indexed **
The Philosophers section now indexes an additional 24 philosophers for the
first time, bringing the current total over 400! The newcomers are John Rawls,
Robert Nozick, Hilary Putnam, Suzanne Langer, and 20 Renaissance-era
philosophers such as Francisco Suarez.
** Journals Section Improved **
The electronic journal listings are now integrated with the database, so
searches can return information on print journals, e-journals, or both, sorted
by topic or philosopher area. Searches can also be done alphabetically.
** Help Support ELC -- use new Associate Programs **
EpistemeLinks.com recently joined several new Associate/Partner programs.
ELC has long been an associate of both Amazon.com (you know, that big site) and
Powells.com (an excellent used bookstore). Help support ELC by making your
purchases from these sites by first visiting ELC and clicking on our ad banners
(they rotate at the top and bottom of each page) or links to these sites. An
actual purchase must be made during that user session for ELC to be credited,
but *any purchase* will count -- not just philosophy related books (music,
posters, videos, electronics, etc)! So if you are going to make a major purchase
at Amazon.com anyway, why not first follow a link from EpistemeLinks.com, and
help support a site that you use often?
The new partners include (see banners and links at ELC):
All-Posters - a great source for prints and posters (including
philosophy-related items)
Half.com - a sibling of EBay, here you can buy used items (incl. philosophy
books)
Knowledge Products - offer books and lectures on tape, including
philosophy.
Books On Tape - exactly what it says.
Alibris - a great resource to help find used books.
Elephant Books - another used and rare books store.
** 10 New Entries at the SEP **
I like to draw attention to the latest entries at the Stanford Encyclopedia
of Philosophy, because it provides such well-written articles. Since Mar. 11 the
SEP has added 10 articles on:
Aristotle's Ethics (Richard Kraut)
Peter of Spain (Joke Spruyt)
Philosophy of Statistical Mechanics (Lawrence Sklar)
Descartes' Life and Works (Kurt Smith)
Integrity (Damian Cox, Marguerite La Caze, and Michael Levine)
Higher-Order Theories of Consciousness (Peter Carruthers)
The Unity of Consciousness (Andrew Brook)
Equality (Stefan Gosepath)
Francis of Marchia (Christopher Schabel)
Robert Desgabets (Patricia Easton)
